Namasté Institute Bodywork Course Descriptions

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS: BODYWORK

MASSAGE THEORY & TECHNIQUE

Namasté Institute's Massage Theory and Technique course is the foundation for learning a Holistic approach to Therapeutic Massage Therapy. Massage Therapy is an ancient holistic healing modality used to bring balance to the nervous system, stimulate the lymphatic and circulatory systems, increase muscle flexibility, and foster universal balance in the structure and function of all systems of the human body. It has been used as preventative healthcare for thousands of years in order to cultivate a sense of inner stillness, relieve pain and foster greater embodiment & mindfulness.

Within this foundation course student's will learn the unique, conscious and sacred style of Namasté Institute's bodywork. Student's will learn how to turn inward to a place of reverance and honor of the recipient and one's self through the cultivation of breath and presence. Student's will learn how to move fluidly with the breath while you learn how to apply long, conscious, flowing and integrating movements around the body. This cultivation of presence, compassion and deep listening allows both the recipient and giver to open to a sacred space of non-doing where healing can occur.

In addition to Namasté Institute's unique style of bodywork, student's will learn full-body soft-tissue massage techniques & theory, joint mobilization, therapeutic myofascial stretching, acupressure, thai techniques and chair massage techniques. Topics covered will include the history of massage therapy, benefits and contraindications, the effects and benefits of massage therapy on both the giver and receiver on all levels—physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual—and the qualities of intentional touch and self-awareness required to create an environment for clients embodied with the energies of healing, safety and nurturance.

There is a strong focus on proper body mechanics and whole body self-care in order to prevent injuries. Daily Yoga classes and videotaped supervised sessions of each student performing massage therapy will give each student the opportunity to correct any body misalignments & body mechanics that the student is unaware of.

Most Importantly, this course also includes 6 hours of individual apprentice time with faculty members along with weekly supervised hands-on practice session's giving and receiving the work in class. Along with working on fellow students and staff, student's will also have the opportunity to work with children of all ages, teenagers, pregnant mothers and the elderly. By course end, student's will have acquired the ability to perform their own unique and complete Massage session and will feel confident upon graduation and licensure to move into entry level practice.

Out-of-class work includes log hours, case studies, homework, and four treatments from professional Massage Therapists, Bodyworkers, and/or Energy Therapists.

INTRODUCTION TO DEEP TISSUE: CLINICAL MASSAGE THERAPY

Namaste' Institute's Clinical Massage Therapy course utilizes Neuromuscular therapy and Myofascial/Connective Tissue Therapy. Clinical Massage Therapy relieves muscle tension, promotes structural integration, reduces mental and emotional stress, and improves organ and glandular function.

Clinical Massage Therapy works with the nervous system and the tissues and structures of the body to address chronic tension created by emotional and physical traumas. Student's will learn unique techniques that help develop a touch that is sensitive to the different qualities of tissue and structure that cause physical and mental discomfort and dis-ease. You will learn how to relieve and clear issues such as muscular fatigue, restricted breathing and postural dysfunctions. Pathology of dis-ease such as—but not limited to—herniated disks, migraines, chronic pain, sports injuries, postural disturbances, back injuries, thoracic outlet syndrome, whiplash, carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica, tendonitis, myofascial pain syndrome, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue will be covered by lecture and hands-on experience when applicable.

This course includes a weekly supervised practice session as well as weekly hands-on practice giving and receiving the work in class. Upon completing the course student's will have acquired the foundational skills to perform a structured Clinical Massage Therapy session, and the entry level ability to distinguish among indications for neuromuscular and myofascial techniques along with other forms of manual therapy.

It is important to emphasize again that this course is an introductory course preparing indivuals for additional intermediate and advanced training approaches to clinical massage therapy and the years of palpation experience required to grasp the complexity of clinical work.
