COURSE DESCRIPTION: ZEN SHIATSU FOUNDATION (150 HOURS)
600 Hour Stand Alone or 150/150 For Licensed Health Care Practitioners
In this program of study student's will gain the introductory knowledge required to begin understanding the Chinese Medicine Meridian System and will also be introduced to the Ayurvedic Medical System philosophies of Thai-Yoga Therapy. Within this program student's will be learning how to apply the art of Shiatsu, an ancient Japanese healing art form steeped in Taoism and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Shiatsu, translated as "finger pressure," dates back 5,000 years to the beginning of Chinese acupuncture. Shiatsu is often called "acupuncture without needles" because its simple manipulations and pressure are applied to the same meridians and points used in acupuncture. Similar to other Asian bodywork methods, Shiatsu is based on principles of Chinese medicine that emphasize the flow of energy (qi in Chinese, ki in Japanese) throughout the body's energetic pathways, or meridians. The shiatsu practitioner's goal is to promote the efficient and balanced flow of ki through applying deep stimulating pressure to the meridians.
Student's will be learning how to apply Shiatsu with thumbs, fingers, palms, forearms, elbows, knees, and feet and assisted Hatha Yoga postures. Student's will learn how to use Shiatsu as preventative medicine to help clients maintain their health, vitality, and stamina. Student's will also learn how this ancient healing art strengthens the vital organs, prevents energy from being blocked in the body, and how it can help in a wide range of disorders and chronic conditions including depression, migraine headache, backache, musculoskeletal pain, PMS, digestive disorders, low energy, chronic fatigue syndrome, injuries, and everyday stress-related conditions. Lastly, Student's will learn how the wisdom of Shiatsu stimulates and awakens the flow of innate healing capabilities within the body in order to bring about a deeper connection between mind, body, and spirit.

Throughout the training student's will also be learning the philosophies of Thai-Yoga Therapy, Nuad Bo Rarn or Ancient Massage, as it is known in Thailand, an ancient and sacred Ayurvedic form of bodywork developed by Ayurvedic Doctors and Buddhist Monks over two thousand years ago in India. Student's will learn about its deep roots in Yoga, Ayurveda, and Buddhist practices and how it is often seen as a physical application of the Buddhist principle of Metta or loving kindness. Most importantly, student's will learn how to work in a purely meditative state with full awareness, mindfulness, and concentration and how to create a clear and pure space for transformation and healing to occur for the emotional, physical, and spiritual bodies (koshas) of the receiver. Lastly, student's will experience how the deeply meditative experience of Shiatsu grounded in Thai-Yoga philosophy results in a profound liberation from mental, physical, and emotional dis-ease as student's receive and perform this ancient healing art.
After completion of the 150 hour Foundational Shiatsu Program
students will receive a certificate of completion in Shiatsu as a
concentration which complements their program of study or current
health care practice for continuing education students. The skill
of applying shiatsu is not something that can be gained quickly.
Great knowledge and skill are required and there are no short
cuts. A body of knowledge that has taken thousands of years to
develop cannot be learned completely in a short time span of 150
hours. First hand instruction with practice under experienced and
highly qualified instructors is the only way to achieve mastery in
shiatsu. In order to be a shiatsu practitioner, one needs to receive a
minimum of 300 hours of training in shiatsu alone. Because of the
nature of self-development required by this modality, it is highly
recommended that students pursue further education in Chinese
Medicine, Japanese acupuncture & Shiatsu theories and continue
their personal development. Also, this program does not certify
students as Thai-Yoga Practitioners. The Thai-Yoga portion of the
program is merely an introduction to the beautiful philosophies of the
application of Thai-Yoga bodywork. It is highly recommended that
any students wishing to pursue further education in Thai Therapies
travel to Thailand and immerse themselves in Thai culture along
with pursuing teaching from a Master of Thai Therapies in the states
or Thailand. We are currently in the process of designing a Shiatsu program as a stand alone program where student's do not have to take the Massage Therapy Theory and Technique aspect of our Holistic Massage Therapy 600 Hour program. Instead, students will be taking the core curriculum along with 250 hours of in-class Shiatsu and 50 hours of practicum hours outside of class totalling the 300 hours of Shiatsu to become a Shiatsu Practitioner. Beginner Students with no training in bodywork can begin this program in February 2008. Practitioners who have already completed a foundational program will be able to begin the advanced training in June 2008. Any students completing the introductory Shiatsu program can transfer into the Practitioner Certification Course to become a Practitioner of Shiatsu.
