COURSE DESCRIPTIONS: PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS PRACTICES
At the School of Massage, students learn the practical information and skills needed to build a successful Massage Therapy Practice. Important business practices are covered, including city, state, and national licensing and certification laws, marketing and business opportunities in the allopathic and holistic health fields. Successful client interviewing and ethics concerning private practice will be covered in order for graduate's to create a professional and safe practice. Students will also explore the variety of continuing education opportunities available and how they can benefit clientele and business opportunities. Most importantly, students will learn how to present their practice to the public and potential employers by learning the basics of advertising and graphic design skills and how to design business cards, brochures, and posters. By course end, students will have acquired the skills to create a business plan and will be prepared to promote their practice after graduation.
THERAPEUTIC SKILLS & PROFESSIONAL ETHICS
This course will enable students to understand how to handle ethical issues with clients and employers, laying the foundation of a professional practice. Students will explore client-therapist relationships, boundary issues, active listening skills, and exploratory dialogue. Students will learn skills and understanding relating to transference and projection and how to differentiate between the professional's transference and projection and the clients. Class topics will include the differentiation between healthy and unhealthy boundaries, the professionals and the clients', emotional release and when it is necessary to refer, sexual abuse and trauma, professional behavior, and how to create a successful, healing and healthy therapeutic session.
