At Namasté we view the ancient path of Yoga as one of the many doorways to accessing deeper levels of being in our relationship with ourselves, others and the sacred. We have experienced that it is through the engagement of “svadhyaya” - witness consciousness or self-inquiry - and steadfastness that we are able to gain the experiential knowledge needed to live more authentically, peaceful and present.
Yoga is an ancient holistic system of health and self development that touches us on every level, physical, psychological, emotional, & spiritual. It views the body as a living temple, as the "container" for the life-force or divine intelligence that animates all living things, and teaches us how to honor and care for this sacred space.
The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj, meaning to join, yoke, or unite the individual self with the source of the innermost universal self. It is a form of self-healing that unites the opposites within us and enables us to find inner stillness within external activity, containment within chaos, strength within ease, concentration within relaxation. Yoga is a beautiful way to connect and contain all that we cultivate within our practice with our daily lives, creating a sense of balance and wholeness instead of the separateness we too often feel within ourselves and towards others.
Yoga is far more than physical exercise or a bodily healing system. It addresses the whole human being from physical health and well-being to the unfoldment of our higher consciousness. Yoga teaches us that we are all part of the infinite, eternal, creative consciousness of the universe, and gives us the tools to clear away our misconceptions about who we think we are. Yoga gives us the power to transform our bodies & our lives by awakening and uniting our inner awareness of our unique creation with our higher consciousness or intelligence. This union teaches us how to live our lives more fully, deeply and authentically within the present moment. When we learn to live life more fully we begin to embody peace even within chaos and are able to connect with joy even in times of sadness. These qualities of awareness of our inner potential and the embodiment and containment of a peaceful state of mind are the ultimate goal of yoga.
